Fixing dead-zone WiFi in your home, office or shed

WiFi strong at the router but useless in the back bedroom, the shed or across the block? Here's why it happens in South West homes and properties — and how to fix it.

Great internet speed at the router, but a frustrating signal in the back bedroom, the office out the back, or anywhere near the shed? This is one of the most common technology complaints we hear across the South West — and it’s rarely a problem with your internet plan. It’s how the WiFi is set up.

Why the signal drops off

A single router can only reach so far, and our region makes it harder: large blocks, double-brick and rammed-earth homes, metal sheds, and granny flats or offices in separate buildings. Walls, distance and interference all chip away at the signal until it’s unusable at the edges.

The fixes, from simplest to best

  1. Reposition the router. Central and up high beats tucked behind the TV in a corner. This alone often helps.
  2. Add a mesh WiFi system. Instead of one router straining to cover everything, several units blanket the whole home or office in one seamless network you never have to switch between. This is the right answer for most homes.
  3. Run a cable to key spots. For a shed, studio or separate office, a network cable (or a point-to-point link across a yard) gives a rock-solid connection that WiFi extenders can’t match.

Why cheap “WiFi extenders” often disappoint

Plug-in extenders can halve your speed and create a second network your devices cling to even when it’s weak. A proper mesh system or cabling avoids both problems — which is why we rarely recommend extenders for anything beyond a quick patch.

Big properties and rural blocks

On larger properties, the trick is getting a strong signal to each building, then good WiFi inside each one — often a mix of cabling between buildings and mesh units within them. Done right, the whole place is genuinely online, sheds and all.

If your WiFi gives up before it reaches where you actually need it, book a WiFi check. We’ll map the dead zones at your place and set up coverage that reaches the whole home, office or property.
