One bar at the kitchen window, nothing down at the shed or out in the back paddock — mobile blackspots are a daily frustration on rural properties across the South West. You can’t move the tower, but you can usually do a lot to get a workable signal where you need it. Here’s what actually helps.
First, understand what you’re working with
Reception depends on your distance from the nearest tower, the terrain between you and it, and the building you’re inside. A big shed or double-brick home can knock out a signal that’s fine just outside. So the fix is often about capturing and carrying the signal that’s already near your property.
The options, from cheapest to best
- Find your best spot and work with it. Walk the property and note where signal is strongest — often a particular window or rise. Sometimes repositioning where you make calls or put a device is enough.
- WiFi calling. If you have internet (NBN, fixed wireless or Starlink), most phones can make calls and texts over WiFi instead of the mobile network. This quietly solves “no signal in the house” for many people — just switch it on in your phone settings.
- A mobile signal booster (repeater). A properly installed, carrier-approved booster captures the outside signal with an external antenna and rebroadcasts it inside the house or shed. This is the real fix for a weak-but-present signal. It must be a legal, approved unit — illegal boosters interfere with the network and carry heavy fines.
- An external antenna on a modem or dedicated device can pull in a usable data signal where a phone alone can’t.
Don’t forget data
If it’s internet you’re chasing rather than phone calls, a fixed wireless, NBN or Starlink connection with good on-property WiFi often beats fighting the mobile network — and gives you WiFi calling as a bonus.
Get it set up right
The difference between a booster that transforms your reception and one that barely helps is almost always the antenna placement and installation. It’s worth doing properly.
