Still on Windows 10? What South West businesses and homes need to do now

Windows 10 stopped getting security updates in October 2025. If you're still on it, here are your real options — upgrade, extend or replace — in plain English.

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 in October 2025. Your computer still turns on and works — but it no longer gets security updates, so any new vulnerability found stays open for good. More than a year on, plenty of local homes and businesses are still running it, often without realising the risk. Here’s how to sort it out.

Why it matters

An unsupported operating system is a growing target. Over time, software makers (browsers, accounting apps, security tools) also drop support for Windows 10, so things gradually stop working. For any business handling customer data, running an unsupported system is also a compliance and insurance concern.

Your options

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11 (best for most). If your PC meets the requirements, this is free and the right long-term move. Many computers from the last few years qualify — we can check in minutes.
  2. Replace the computer. Older machines that can’t run Windows 11 are usually due for replacement anyway. A migration is a good moment to move to a faster, supported machine.
  3. Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft’s paid stop-gap buys limited extra time, but it’s a short-term bridge, not a destination — and the consumer option is close to running out. Useful only to cover a planned transition.
  4. Do nothing (not recommended). The machine keeps working but the security risk compounds every month.

What to check before upgrading

  • Whether each PC is Windows 11-capable (there’s a quick compatibility check).
  • That your important programs run on Windows 11.
  • That everything is backed up before any upgrade.
  • Whether it’s cheaper to upgrade or simply replace an ageing machine.

Don’t forget the rest

If you’re upgrading several machines, it’s also the right time to check backups, security settings and licensing across the business — the things that quietly drift out of date.

If you’re not sure which of your computers are affected or what they can run, book a quick review. We’ll tell you exactly where you stand and the most cost-effective way forward.
